What it means

Bad-tempered and snappy specifically because you haven't eaten. It's that short fuse you get when low blood sugar turns a minor inconvenience into a full meltdown.

  • Feed me before I get hangry, please.

  • He's always hangry if lunch runs late.
  • We need to stop for food before everyone gets hangry.

Where it comes from

A portmanteau of 'hungry' and 'angry' that's been around since at least the early 1900s but took off in everyday use in the 2010s. It was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2018.
