What it means

To draw attention to a fact, mistake, or detail that someone may not have noticed. It can also mean to physically indicate something with your finger.

Examples

  • She pointed out a small typo on the second slide.
  • I should point out that this offer ends on Sunday.
  • He pointed out the cathedral as we drove past the river.
  • Several reviewers pointed out the same flaw in the design.

Where it comes from

Separable. Common in formal writing too: 'as the report points out'. The literal pointing meaning came first; the 'mention' meaning is metaphorical.
