What it means

To be careful and watch for possible danger or problems. As a one-word warning ('Look out!') it means 'be careful right now', often shouted suddenly.

Examples

  • Look out! There's a cyclist coming around the corner.
  • Look out for pickpockets when you travel on the metro.
  • She told her kids to look out for cars before crossing.
  • Look out for sudden changes in the weather up in the mountains.

Where it comes from

Often used with 'for' when naming the danger. 'Lookout' as a noun means either a person watching for danger or a high viewing spot.
