What it means
To take someone or something to a place and leave them there, usually by car. It can also mean to fall asleep, or for numbers and quality to decrease gradually.
Examples
- I'll drop you off at the station on my way to work.
- Could you drop the kids off at school before nine o'clock?
- He dropped off during the movie and started snoring loudly.
- Sales tend to drop off sharply after the holiday season ends.
Where it comes from
Separable when it means 'deliver': 'drop the package off' or 'drop off the package'. Inseparable in the 'fall asleep' and 'decrease' meanings.
