first floor vs ground floor
A level of a building above the ground level (in British usage) or the entrance level itself (in American usage).
American
first floor
“The lobby and reception are on the first floor.”
British
ground floor
“The lobby and reception are on the ground floor.”
Good to know
This is a classic source of confusion: in the US the "first floor" is the entrance level, but in the UK the entrance level is the "ground floor" and the "first floor" is one storey up.
